The best and worst gadgets this holiday season

According to the CEA, this year could be a record-breaking holiday shopping season for consumer gadgets--with spending levels reaching a 17-year high.
Although overall spending is expected to be down by 2%, consumers will be spending more on consumer electronics. According to the reports, 73%  of U.S. adults (up from 67% last year) are planning to give gadgets as gifts this year.
But is everyone going to be a big winner this holiday season?
Definitely not.
While companies like Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), Google (GOOG: 587.19 ,-8.67 ,-1.46%) andMicrosoft (MSFT: 25.78 ,-0.44 ,-1.70%) could break the bank with their new devices, other companies like BlackBerry-maker RIM (RIMM: 56.30 ,-1.48 ,-2.56%), Palm (HPQ: 41.75 ,-0.78 ,-1.83%) and, interestingly enough, Nintendo could watch their products collect dust on the shelf.
Here is a quick breakdown of the expected winners and losers of this year’s holiday shopping season:
1. BY PRODUCTS:
Winners:
  • iPad: Competitive tablet pricing and rock solid OS and features.  New features such as multitasking, AirPlay, and wireless printing with the upcoming OS 4.2 upgrade will bolster an already stellar product.
  • Kinect: The tremendous  base is going to lead to a significant amount of curious consumers. Love it or hate it, this new type of control is bound to be at the top of the list, even if just from a curiosity standpoint.
  • Droid Pro:  What could be a final blow to RIM, the Droid Pro looks poised to take a bigger slice of the enterprise and consumer market.

IIPM-GID club initiative - Diwali event for less privileged children

We Share Because We Care

1st to 3rd November 2010

This time, on behalf of the GID Club, the IIPM students organized a Diwali event starting from 1st November, 2010 till 3rd November, 2010. These days were especially dedicated for the less-privileged but special kids.

On the first two days of the event, we had set up a counter and named it “I SHARE”, wherein students were invited and informed about this beautiful event. It was remarkable to notice that students were willing to listen to us and the amazing part was that we were able to collect gifts around Rs. 12000 and cash around Rs. 6000, which was also used for purchasing more gifts for the little ones. All the items, like Cadbury Celebrations et al, were gift wrapped especially for the occasion of Diwali. Some students also gifted puzzle boxes, stationary items like pencil, rubber, scale etc. Some gifts carrying little financial value but a lot of meaning and perspective while the others carried a lot of both.

The last day was the best part of the Theme “We Share Because We Care”, as the 52 children along with their teachers were invited to IIPM Campus Delhi. Prof. Rohit Manchanda (Dean-center for HRD, IIPM) was the guest of Honor for the day. Students had fun with these kids by playing dog and the bone and by making the children participate in the dance session. Then later these kids were motivated to sing poems that they have learnt. These little children were also served grilled sandwiches by Salad Chef. In return, the kids showered their love upon us by gifting their hand colored greeting cards.

Finally, we bid farewell to them by wishing them good luck and handing over all the gifts that were solely purchased for them. We hope that this event was as memorable for them as it was for all of us.

More car owners behind on auto loans

Consumers straining to meet household expenses are taking longer and longer to make their car payments, increasing the risk they'll default on those loans and potentially making it harder and more expensive for everyone else to get car loans. Car loans that were 60 days past due — and likely to soon go into default — were up 17% in the fourth quarter, says Experian Automotive credit tracking. And the share of loans 60 days past due is expected to be up 40% by December, compared with the share in December 2007, TransUnion Credit says.
Even with the increases, 60-day delinquent loans remain only about 1% of outstanding loans. But any rise is bad news for buyers, who've already seen lenders tighten standards. They are less willing to lend to subprime customers and asking for larger down payments even from customers with solid credit histories. Lenders are also less willing to issue loans that are for more than a car is worth — a practice that had been common this decade as buyers traded cars on which they still owed money and wrapped that amount into their new loan.
"A lot of lenders made changes in 2008 to their lending practices," says Melinda Zabritski, director of automotive credit for Experian Automotive. "I expect to see that holding steady for the rest of this year."
Experian says 60-day delinquencies are highest in Mississippi, the District of Columbia, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. Delinquencies are lowest in North Dakota, Arkansas, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. Buyers in those areas tend to borrow less, says TransUnion, and are more likely to make their payments because they rely more on their cars.
The average loan for a new vehicle was $24,444 in the fourth quarter, down $338 from the first quarter of last year, Experian says.
Auto sales have taken a beating in recent months, down 39.4% year-to-date. Rebates and incentives are up 7.1% through the end of February, according to industry tracking firm Autodata, as the automakers attempt to lure more buyers into showrooms.
But the cost of financing could soon start rising, says Pete Turek, automotive vice president in TransUnion's financial services group. Typically, lenders try to make up money they lose in delinquencies and repossessions by raising other customers' costs.
Says Turek, "When there's higher losses in an industry, the lenders will charge higher rates to account for those losses."

India pioneers global plan to green economy

India will be one of two countries to pioneer "a global partnership that will fundamentally change the way governments value their ecosystems", World Bank President Robert B. Zoellick announced here on Thursday.

"We are here to do something that none has done before," Zoellick declared at a press conference on the sidelines of the Oct 18-29 UN biodiversity summit. That something is to ensure that countries take into account the services provided by their ecosystems - the value of the water stored underground because a forest allows more water to seep in, for example.

"This is a concept now widely accepted," Zoellick said. "Now we have to take the valuations provided by projects like TEEB (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity) to ministries of finance and government economic agencies around the world."
